International History
Alpha Delta Pi was founded May 15th, 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, GA and holds the distinction of being the first secret society in the world for college women. The original name was the "Adelphean Society," which is derived from the Greek word meaning "sister." The name changed to Alpha Delta Phi in 1905 and then to Alpha Delta Pi in 1913, but the basic principles and ritual are still much the same as those developed from the start.
Our founders were Eugenia Tucker Fitzgerald, Ella Pierce Turner, Octavia Andrew Rush, Mary Evans Glass, Sophronia Woodruff Dews, and Elizabeth Williams Mitchell. Eugenia, the acknowledged leader of the Adelpheans, was chosen as the first president. Within two weeks of the founding of the Adelphean Society, these six women were joined by 13 others to form the first chapter of the Adelphean Society. Our founders paved the way for all other sororities and millions of other sorority women across the world.
Alpha Delta Pi was founded on the principles of scholarship, leadership, service, and sisterhood. The ideals and values established by the first members 159 years ago are still a part of our sisterhood today. These principles guide over 215,000 women in more than 140 active collegiate chapters. In addition, there are over 150 alumnea associations of ADPi.
Xi Chapter History
Our chapter was founded June 2nd, 1915 at the Berry Motel. It is the 14th chapter of Alpha Delta Pi. The chapter was started when twelve women who were part of the Cryterion Club petitioned to start a chapter of ADPi. The chapter moved into its first house in 1927.
